Are Halloween Contacts Safe?

Halloween decorative contact lenses are on the rise and certainly look cool, but are they safe? Many eye doctors say not really…

It’s crucial to remember that these are not mere accessories but medical devices that require careful consideration for the health and safety of your eyes.   One size does not fit all.  Decorative contact lenses require the same level of care as prescriptive lenses.   It is actually illegal to sell colored contact lenses without a prescription.

Your eye doctor must measure each eye to properly fit the lenses and evaluate how your eye responds to the lens.  A poor fit can cause serious eye damage including:

  • Corneal infections/scratches
  • Pink eye
  • Decreased Vision
  • Blindness

The following guidelines are recommended if you would like to wear Halloween decorative contacts:

  1. Get an eye exam
  2. Get a valid prescription for contacts
  3. Follow contact lens care instructions carefully
  4. See your eye doctor right away if you have any symptoms of redness, eye pain, or decrease in vision
  5. Never share contact lenses with anyone else.
