June – Cataract Awareness Month

What are Cataracts?

A cataract is when your eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. Proteins in your lens break down.  Your vision becomes blurry, hazy or less colorful.

Symptoms of Cataracts may include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Extra sensitivity to light
  • Bright colors appear faded or yellow

Causes of Cataracts:

  • Aging
  • Family history of cataracts
  • Medical problems such as diabetes
  • Sun (UV rays) exposure without sunglasses
  • Smoking

How are cataracts diagnosed?

A comprehensive eye exam by your optometrist can determine if you have cataracts.
